National workshop on "Entrepreneurship in Library & Information Work" Organized by IPE, Sponsored by ICSSR, (Min. of Education, GoI), New Delhi.
A two-day
National Workshop on “Entrepreneurship Library and Information work” organized
by Institute of Public Enterprise, Hyderabad, Telangana and the event was
sponsored by ICSSR during 23-24 March, 2023. witnessed around 35 participants
from pan India. This workshop was designed to offer practical guidelines and
direct the librarians and library professionals. It started with welcome
address by Dr. G. Venkata Nagaiagh, In-charge librarian of IPE, and convenor of
workshop, presented the dynamics of the conference and explained the objectives
and subthemes of the event. The
inaugural session was hosted by Prof. S Srinivasa Murthy, Director of IPE, he
extends warm welcome and explain about promoting library and information
science profession by conducting conferences.
Shri. Ramesh
Yernagula, Director of National Social Science documentation centre, ICSSR, New
Delhi, delivered his keynote address and insisted young Librarians and Library
professionals involve themselves in conducting digital activity to engage the
user and importance of libraries and how library understood by different
perspectives. Following by Dr. Prarthana Kumar, Workshop Co-convener and
Associate professor address the gathering by worm welcome note and speech about
how entrepreneurship in library work.
The theme of
Entrepreneurship in Library & Information work is focused on the
entrepreneurial mindset and skills that librarians and information
professionals can develop to create and implement innovative solutions that
meet the changing needs of their communities.
Sub-themes are:
- Identifying opportunities: Entrepreneurial librarians are always on the lookout for ways to innovate and improve library services.
- Creating a culture of innovation: Libraries are often seen as traditional institutions, but entrepreneurial librarians can work to create a culture of innovation within their organizations.
- Developing new services and programs: Entrepreneurial librarians are skilled at developing new services and programs that meet the needs of their communities.
- Marketing and outreach: Effective marketing and outreach are essential for any successful entrepreneurial endeavor. Librarians and information professionals can use their skills in these areas to promote new services and programs, build relationships with community partners, and engage with patrons in new and innovative ways.
Overall, the
theme of Entrepreneurship in Library & Information work is about empowering
librarians and information professionals to be agents of change within their
organizations and communities, and to embrace the entrepreneurial mindset as a
way to create meaningful impact.

Prof.
Narendranath Menon speaks about the overview of why librarians need to take
entrepreneurial journey, what are the advantage and disadvantage of
entrepreneurship and how to sustain in the dynamic environment. He also
mentioned Effective marketing and outreach are essential for any successful
entrepreneurial endeavor.
Dr. Prarthana Kumar, workshop co-convener and Assistant professor shared some useful content on Entrepreneurship in Information / Knowledge Services. She also explained five laws of library science in depth to Books are for use, every book has its reader, Every reader has his book, Save the time of the reader, Library is a Growing organism and these are implement to embracing the entrepreneurial spirit by add Creativity, Persistence, and Passion on the librarian.
Mr. G. Mohan, Management consultant, delivered by online mode on success stories and learnings / information and knowledge base entrepreneurs. He shared his experience on IndiaBusinessQuiz.com and how to create, distribution, marketing and monetizing of new business and what are the challenges and lessons faced by an entrepreneur, and he interacted with participants.

Director-B-School express Pvt. Ltd., talks about how sweeping shifts towards
different versions and how Generation, Technology, Agility, New Generation
Players, Start Up Wave, Rate of Change, Frequency of disruption, Money Flow
change as per the technology advancement.

Last session of the day given by Shri. N V Satyanarayana, who was the chairman in managing director of Informatics (India) Ltd. Shared a lot of thoughts on an entrepreneurship, startups and how to generate income our institution through library. Who do people turn entrepreneurs? in this topic creating a better future, wants to be one's own boss, making difference, Risk hungry, Risk happy, Legacy etc., about SIIA board members and it's functions and Information industry segments outlook and last but least Entrepreneurial Librarianship and opportunities, sub parts of Social entrepreneurship and entrepreneurial Business. He discussed one more to ChatGPT, it gives accurate information within seconds and it is related to the AI.
On the
second day of the event, the first two sessions on Information Products that
have worked given by Dr. G. Venkata Nagaiah, and Idea generation for
information based enterprise given by Dr. N G Satish.

Dr. G Venkata Nagaiah, In-charge librarian, convenor, welcoming everyone to the national workshop on the second day. He speak few minutes on what I did or what I was involved in the information products work. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India Act, 1997, their key factors, Sahitya Akademi, Compilation of information at Sahitya Akademi, Libraries can support small businesses and Entrepreneurs, librarian as a Social Entrepreneurs, Feminist Bibliography (Aqui Thami), and The walking Librarian K.P. Radhamani etc.
Dr. N G Satish, professor, IPE, delivered in depth information about "LIS Entrepreneurship", library functions, laws of library science, library profession, economic information, product sampler, entrepreneurial approach, linked with creativity. Product sampler for general users to data of interactive, data collection, readability certification, reimagining text, fake news identification, training in use of source, research leads, ghost writing, info monitoring, customer types, who to understand customers, and need for LIS enterprise incubator, etc., said it was necessary.

Dr. Shailesh Yagnik,Advisor-MIMI and KEIC, Ahmedabad, discusses some points on entrepreneurial opportunities for Library professional work in the Librarianship as a profession provides a variety of employment opportunities. Most of the library science professionals (LIS) choose employment for their career prospects. To retain the LIS professionals in the same field and to serve Library field, there is an urgent need to explore the alternative to the LIS jobs.

shared their thoughts Very nicely one by one. Dr. S. N. Chary, Deputy Director, NASSDOC-ICSSR, New
Delhi, talked about a topic “Effective use of Intrapreneurship in the
Libraries: Challenges
and Prospects”. Entrepreneurship is an interdisciplinary field of study.
Shrinking resources and increasing
demands for information and services
are looking for a new operating
model to meet present challenges for
LIS professionals. Intrapreneurial Librarians, intrapreneurial librarians talk about their
challenges and prospects. Told about Implementation strategies and Entrepreneurial
Skills for the User Services etc. and ended with closing remarks. After a
thoughtful session by Dr. Chary, Mr. Ganapathi, Librarian, EDII, Ahmedabad shared
the valuable information about “Intrapreneurial Librarian”. He started introductory
comments, Entrepreneurship, Entrepreneur & Entrepreneurship, The Characteristics
of Intrapreneurial Librarian, Ten Commandments to Intrapreneurial Librarian, Role
of Intrapreneurial Librarian the present scenario etc.

Rajendra Kumbhar, Sr. Professor, Pune University, first person of panel member delivered
his thoughts and valuable information in step by step Need of the
Entrepreneurial Skills for LIS Students, teaching curriculum, teaching methods
and assessment, syllabus and info services, project activities etc.

Madhusudhan, University of Delhi, talked about that topic in details Educating
the Entrepreneurial Librarian, what are the differences in Librarianship and entrepreneurship
in construct way, Areas of Core Skills & Entrepreneurship, Challenges &
Barriers are explained in brief.
Dr. K Bharathi, Associate professor, Osmania University, Hyderabad, told this workshop is very useful to library professionals and she told to link up with the course in Library Science. How can strengthen the library science course with this workshop. What type skills we develop in our students in pursuing time etc.
Dr. Sarika Sawant, Associate professor, Women's University, Mumbai, Discussed to our workshop members about the title "Entrepreneurship: Librarians can be Entrepreneurs or Produce Entrepreneurs" in this topic how can include with our library science, what type of Opportunities in Entrepreneurship, Independent library consultant or archivist, Indexer/abstractor, Career Counselor/Guidance, Library Software Developing Industry, Online Book shop/Periodical Publishing, Organizing a small scale collection etc.

After the issue of certificates almost all participants share their experience in the two-day workshop.
